Transport Focus have just published some research into about why drivers are reluctant to take breaks on a long journey. The reasons vary, but some of the top reasons for not stopping include:
- Drivers having a strong faith in their ability to remain alert on long journeys
- Wanting to maximise time at the destination, therefore stopping is seen as a waste of time
- Scepticism about what the experience will be like at a motorway service station
Research shows that driving when tired can be as dangerous as drink-driving. This is why the Highway Code recommends planning ahead and including rest stops on a long journey, taking a break of at least 15 minutes every two hours. Stopping at a motorway service area gives you a safe space to stretch your legs and refresh, helping you stay alert and focused for the rest of your journey.
